LONDON’S Green MEP Jean Lambert was joined by Jon Nott, Green London Assembly candidate for North East London, in visiting PhotoVoice, an organisation providing photographic training for marginalised groups of people.
“I am enormously impressed by what this project is doing to give some of London’s most vulnerable citizens a mechanism by which they can express themselves, share their stories, and hopefully generate greater understanding,” said Mrs Lambert.
PhotoVoice specialises in photographic training for marginalised groups of people around the world. Based in Hackney, PhotoVoice works alongside both international NGOs and local groups, to provide in-the-field training in photography and documentary skills for those whose views often go unheard.
Projects to date have included work with refugees, street children, children in need and women living with HIV.
Mrs Lambert said: “PhotoVoice help these groups to raise awareness of their lives through photography and to generate an income through their new found skills.”
Mrs Lambert and Mr Nott were given a tour of the organisation’s facilities and learnt more about the projects being undertaken.
“Given my interest, and the growing role of the European Union, in the
question of Social Inclusion, listening to the voices of communities and practitioners
is essential. It was a great to have the opportunity to hear first hand from
those working to improve social awareness by empowering marginalised groups,
both in London and abroad,” she added.
