MEP CELEBRATES EALING'S POLISH CONNECTION

GREEN MEP Jean Lambert will join the Mayors of Ealing and Bielany in Warsaw, Poland, on Friday (July 5, 2002) to witness the final signature on a town twinning declaration between the two boroughs.

Mrs Lambert, Green MEP for London, will attend the Ealing Town Hall ceremony as a guest of Mayor Cllr Kieron Gavan.

"As Poland prepares to join the European Union in 2004, twinning arrangements such as this play a vital role in developing cultural ties and understanding between the two countries," said the MEP.

"Ealing and Bielany have certain things in common. As the boroughs develop stronger links we can look forward to a fruitful exchange of ideas and further co-operation in sporting, cultural and educational activities," she added.

Ealing has the second largest Polish community outside Poland - after Chicago - and Bielany is one of the seven districts making up the capital city Warsaw.

The formal twinning process began in December last year, when a civic delegation including former mayor Ranjit Dheer, councillors and prominent members of Ealing's Polish community signed the first declaration in Bielany Town Hall.
