"The Green Party of England and Wales, including myself and my colleague Caroline Lucas (South East Green MEP), has signed-up to a statement drafted by Alice Mahon MP opposing an attack on Iraq, and has helped fund its appearance in the national press. The statement, promoted by the No War on Iraq Liaison Group and the Committee of 100 Opposed to War on Iraq, reads:
It is our view that Tony Blair is out of touch with what the people of this country want. Britain is the only US ally prepared to countenance an invasion of Iraq, and what we do can therefore make a significant contribution to a peaceful solution. Over half the population of Iraq have never known a time when they were not at war or suffering sanctions as a result of war. We need to change the future for them and for many others throughout the world who have never known peace or freedom from oppression. But we cannot do that through bombs and the threat of starvation and disease. We must keep the weapons inspectors in Iraq: ease the sanctions and help to create an independent, educated and healthy population able to oppose the government of Saddam Hussein. We must weaken his power and strengthen his people. We must spend the money we have ready for war on making the world a better place: we are told that the money America will spend could provide 4 years of health-care for the world's poorest countries. Which will do more to reduce hatred and hostility? We sincerely hope that mounting public opposition in Britain will exercise a restraining effect on Tony Blair." |

European Parliament fails to deliver a message on the Iraq war. The European parliament today failed to adopt a resolution on the Iraq war. A joint resolution by Socialists, Greens/EFA and the Liberals was narrowly defeated by 37 votes (218 yes, 255 no, 46 abstentions ).
Monica Frassoni, Co-President of the Green/EFA group said after the vote:"We deeply regret that the Parliament was unable to show consistency with its vote on the 30th January before the beginning of the war, in which it was strongly critical of an unilateral attack on Iraq. Today, Parliament was unable to articulate the overwhelming public opinion against war, and remained silent on the issue."
"The failure to adopt the resolution was due to a combination of Italian Radicals, British Labour and 28 leftist deputies from GUE, who voted against it after picking on minor points that in fact didn't alter the overall anti-war stance of the resolution. Caught in their dogmatic thinking, the leftists were incapable of understanding that the logic of the proposed common resolution was clearly against the war. By voting against it, they helped the pro-war faction in parliament to win the day and left the Parliament voiceless."

Tony Blair must
oppose US plans for Star Wars missile defence and war on Iraq or risk destroying
the UK's international reputation, London MEP Jean Lambert told the CND Annual
Conference on Sunday (September 15, 2002). "The Bush administration's attitude
to international law completely undermines any supposed rationale for war on Iraq.
We have seen time and time again how the US uses its military and economic might
to ignore or undermine any international obligations which stand in its way,"
said Mrs Lambert.
